Skunks, bedbugs & hospital trips...

So this weekend has sucked so far.

I was really excited to go to Pagan Pride Day yesterday. I was going to get a booth with my sister and we were gonna do tarot readings and hang out with other pagans and just have a really great day, hopefully!

Then, Friday night at about 9:30 pm, my husband took the dog for a walk before bed. A friend of mine, who has been staying with us temporarily, came into the bedroom where I was nursing and asked why he suddenly smelled really strong green onions. I had no idea and didn't smell anything, at first. Then it wafted back to the bedroom.

"That's a SKUNK!"

Oh shit. The dog.

My friend poked his head out and sure enough, the dog had been sprayed. Poor thing. Apparently, she took it fully in the face and was currently foaming at the mouth, writhing and smearing herself on the wet grass outside. The smell was stronger than I've ever smelled it. My friend went to the store to buy a dozen quarts of tomato juice. A neighbor who is a dog groomer came out to see who "got it" and told us to mix a quart of hydrogen peroxide and a half cup of baking soda with dishsoap and wash her in that.

My husband then, without the forethought to have me grab the leash, let the dog in the house. So, now we have a wet, smelly, scared dog running around the living room trying to figure out what she should be doing. Our dog is kinda dumb anyway (sorry, but its true) and she gets scared stupid. Whenever there's a crisis like this, her IQ drops and she ends up doing exactly what you DON'T want her doing. Like jumping up on the sofa.

I was holding the baby and started screaming at the dog to get off the sofa and my husband was trying to coax her into the bathroom and the baby started screaming because I was screaming and then finally, Bill got the dog to move.

I put the baby in her highchair (she was still screaming) and tried to get the futon cover off the sofa so I could wash it and found a bug.

Now, I have had to deal with fleas (when Bill was stationed with the Navy in San Diego) but I have never been infested with any other kind of bug and was getting annoyed that there seemed to be an ever-increasing population of them coming into my house. We live about 50 feet from the South Platte River that goes through Denver and so I figured it was because there's a bunch of nature along the shoreline. But this was different.

I had noticed lately, also, that I had been waking up with bug bites and even found one on the little burp-rag that Edie had been sleeping on. I had showed this to my friend (he's a real brainiac and I figured he'd know) but he was half-asleep and assured me it wasn't something to worry about.

But now, I had seen another one on the futon.

I got online and looked up bedbugs and saw exactly what I had seen in real life.

SHIT!

I hate bugs.

I *really* hate bugs that bite me or my child and SUCK OUR BLOOD. This is DISGUSTING!!!

I have no idea where they came from! I have NEVER had anything like this happen and was happy to be able to say that! I know our trashy neighbors from upstairs moved out about two months ago, after only living there for about a month. Could they have brought them & then abandoned them to find someone else? I don't know. I just know that I wanted to leave this place and never come back!

So, after the dog was washed, we checked the bed and found my backrest crawling with them. This is so disgusting!!! We threw that out and made a midnight run to WalMart where I spent our grocery money to buy $100 worth of mattress and pillow covers and we came home and started the first of a dozen loads of laundry (all the bedding, pillows, dog bed, and any dirty clothes we had) and vacuumed like mad. We tore the bed apart and, thankfully, only found a few in the box springs. We vacuumed them up and covered the box springs with zippered mattress covers, so if there are more in there, they'll just die, but can't get out. We did the same with the futon mattress, so that's pleasant in the living room.

By 3am, we'd made enough progress that I could get into the bed without freaking out... not that I slept well. So now our bed is hermetically sealed. You hear plastic rustling whenever you move. There is air caught in the pillow covers so it is impossible to position them comfortably, but I'm afraid to unzip them, even just enough to push the air out.

So, I ditched my plans for Saturday.

Its so frustrating. It really feels like every time I have an opportunity to make money, crap like this happens. So, I'm thinking, alright... tomorrow's another day. I have started working at my favorite metaphysical shop on Sundays and will have the chance to do readings then.

Saturday evening, the dog stinks and we're still doing more laundry because of doing small loads in the hope that we can get any bedbug eggs killed by drying laundry really hot. My mom calls and says she's sick. I'm in the middle of dinner and Edie's fussing and I'm about as stressed as I think I can be and now this. My friend goes over to check on her but as time goes by and she gets worse, he eventually gets her to my house.

Get all the crises under one roof, at least.

She gets here and tells me her chest hurts. Great. Wonderful. Can I run away from home now?

I give her nitro-glycerin, as she's had heart disease, a heart attack and unexplained chest pain before. It doesn't help so we call 911.

We got my mom to the hospital and settled and they decided to keep her overnight to see if she ends up with cardiac enzymes that would indicate a heart attack. In the past, that's only happened once. Usually they just say its unexplained but she's fine and send her home the next day. I'm guessing that will happen today, too, but its enough to ensure that I can't do anything else today. What a surprise. Now I can't do readings at the store because I have another person to take care of today.

So if things happen in threes, that means this cycle is over. OVER. Universe, do you hear me? ONLY GOOD, PLEASANT, NICE, HAPPY things now. Thanks!
